The band samplers of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries are wonderful They were not worked by schoolgirls or the daughters of rich - at least not for the most part- but by the professional embroiderers of the time The rich and powerful would want their houses to be furnished in the latest and most sumptuous styles and for many years the way to embellish fabrics had been to embroider them either in self colour, contrasting colour or in shades of thread that were available The samplers were to show off the styles possble, to try out ideas and for customers to choose the ones they liked. This is the third in our series of genuine patternsfrom the 16th, 17th and 18th Century. Many of them would hve been devised with the needle on evenweave linen rather than drawn out first. Starting at: £7.50

For this, the fourth in our series of band samplers featuring designs from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, we introduce some people. They are men and they are often known as "boxers". Traditional Band Sampler 5 - MH20150012

    Starting at: £7.50

This, the fifth sampler in the series, features an abundance of flowers, fruit and leaves amidst intertwining branches. There are berry forms, acorns, trefoils and even what seems to be a pineapple - still an unknown fruit to most people in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. For someone you know who has an old house and mature garden, this sampler, or designs from it, could be just what would fit admirably in their life The beauty of good designs, however, is that they stay good whatever the century and this sampler would look wonderful in the most modern home too. 9. mh20150014

    Traditional Band Sampler 6 - MH20150014

    Starting at: £7.50

On this sampler, the sixth in the series, the band designs become wider as they move down the fabric, ending with one so broad that it needs more room than the border would allow. Several of the bands feature the "S" shapes so liked in the 16th century and there are some "boxeers" (men) featured too Also enjoy the leaves and acorns. Learn More
  10. MH20150016

    Traditional Band Sampler 7 - MH20150016

    Starting at: £7.50

On this sampler, the seventh in our series, we see more wonderful leaves, plants, flowers and pods. Formal and stylised, the designs of the bands are far from static. All are alive with interest and have so many possible uses for other The interlaced and stacked frameworks that form the structure for the plant forms are ingenious too and worthy of study in themselves. Many of these would have been worked out on the fabric, as pencils and paper, or their 16th, 17th or 18th century equivalents, were seldom to hand. All are genuine designs found on old samplers and this time we introduce not only some 'boxers' (the men with the short hair) but some gentlemen in breeches who look as if they are carrying candles. It is quite possible that these represented identifiable characters to people of the time. Learn More
  11. Traditional Band Sampler 8 - MH20150018

    Traditional Band Sampler 8 - MH20150018

    Starting at: £7.50

Whilst putting these 16th, 17th and 18th century band designs together to form a sampler I kept thinking of them as 'Pretty Maids All in a Row'. Each is a set of repeated floral The inventiveness of the embroiderers of these centuries never ceases to amaze me. Their work is full of quirky charm and a love of plants is often to the fore. Pattern too was important to them and is a timeless quality we can still enjoy. It is easy to see how individual motifs could be employed for other purposes, such as for greetings cards or decorating household items. You are instantly invited to deploy them in many wonderful ways. Firstly, enjoy working the sampler. The other ideas will come along as you go. Learn More
